Today's topic is How to set goals. This is a great one where we can learn a lot, all the time! No matter who you are, or how many years you have been doing this for, there is still stuff to learn on goal setting. I will cover some of my golden nuggets here in this part 1. Why is goal setting important? There are a lot of reasons why goal setting is important in your life. As always, let me tell you a story from my life. When I was 20 years old I had a job I actually really liked. I was happy working there. I worked in the evening, so I had the whole day at home to spend as I liked. Even though I had like 8 hours a day where I did not work, and did not sleep, I rarely got up at bed. I was watching Netflix the whole day and was stunned to find out I was tired until I left for work. I have no power during the day, even though I got 8 hours of sleep. I felt like I couldn't do anything in the daytime when I had to work in the evening. I kept saying to myself “I have to get some rest until I have to go to work.” This mindset ruined me. I became lazy and didn't want to do anything, even on my days off. I felt like I had no purpose other than working, eating, sleeping, watching netflix and sometimes drinking with my buddies. When I look back now it was almost as if I had turned blind. I couldn't see how my future would be. I couldn't see where I was going, or why I was doing the things I was doing. In the end I had accepted that working for paycheck to paycheck was okay with me. I kinda gave up, and I actually felt okay with that. “Many people live for a paycheck. That's also okay with me” Then one day I looked at myself in the mirror and I could see I looked tired. I didn't even feel tired but I looked like I hadn't slept for 10 days. I did not know what to do, but I did remember I just learned something about meditation. I have never tried this and it actually felt like a scam to be honest. It felt like something crazy people would do. I tried it out anyway. The first time I tried it, it was awful. My mind was racing and I couldn't get a hold on my thoughts. I decided I would try it out for 2 weeks. After 2 weeks it was like magic for me. My mind was quiet when I meditated and I felt great. One day I decided to ask myself a question and see if I could get any answers while meditating. “What do I want to do with my life?” I closed my eyes and then I saw it. I saw what I already knew. I saw my goals clearly, this was what i forgot, this was why i was alive and what i was supposed to do! When I was done meditating I took a pen and paper and started writing all my goals down. I didn't even think about it. Whatever I wanted in my life, I wrote it down. I wrote down 14 goals and was thinking. “If i get this, this would be my dream life” The things that happened to me afterward were amazing. I got more motivated to do something each day to achieve my goals. Many of my goals were marked as completed like 4 years after. Remember these were my life goals! 4 years! Now I keep setting goals all the time to know where I want to go with my life. This is a really strong guideline, and motivation at the same time! Okay, so why is goal setting important? It's important because it gives you a clear picture of where you are going, and it will be very clear if you go down a path away from your goals. Always keep your goals for yourself. They are yours and not something to share. It's not only the big goals that are important, daily goals are just as important and beneficial as long term goals. If you have a to-do list on your phone it's very easy to set new goals and track how you are doing. Goal Setting is a SKILL! Why do I say this? Isn't it obvious? No its not. Many people have this idea that they will be a master of goal setting, the first time they try it. After they tried it for a week they gave up, because they couldn't get the hang of it. This will take time, and you will fail! Instead of thinking “I must not fail” Instead think “I must learn something from my failures” If you dont learn anything from a failure, it's a failure. If you learn something from it, you just become better at your skill! Congrats! Write it down on paper! When you make goals it's very important to write it down on a paper. Why is this? When writing things down, it's very hard for your brain not to think about this goal. This will cause your goal to be printed deep into your brain. If you write it on the phone or computer, you will not get the same effect. This however only applies to long term goals. Short term goals or Daily goals, are best written down on your phone on a to-do list. This way you can always watch on your phone what to do next if you feel lost during the day. Change your mindset Okay so this is a big one. This one could make or break goal setting. Many people set goals with this in their mind “I can't achieve big goals, so to not let myself down i will write minor goals instead.” You write your goals after how much money you currently have and how your living situation is right now. This you need to stop doing right now. Instead of thinking “I can't do this” Think “How do i do this” When you do this your brain will start thinking and help you answer this question. Instead of making goals on what you think could be archived, set goals after what you really want to do in your life. You wanna be a singer but can't sing? “How could I learn to sing?” We see things all the time that look impossible. Have you ever heard of Henry “Crip” Heard? He is a one legged man. He has a desire to dance. For most people with one leg this would just be a dream, not a goal. Henry did think this way “How can I learn to dance?” He found a solution and is now a pro dancer living his dreams. If he can achieve his goals just by wanting it hard enough, there is no reason that you can't get what you want in your life. Exercises The first exercise is so you can find your goals. What is it you truly desire? Meditation is the best way to find this. Simply meditate, get in a deep state of relaxation, and then ask yourself “If anything was possible, what would make this life my dream life?” If the answer doesn't come to you the first time, don't worry. Just try again the next day. Meditation is something you have to train before mastering. If you feel very happy by thinking of your goals, these are the right goals for you. The second exercise is how to achieve your goals. First of all you have to be passionate about your goal. Then grab your phone and get ready to record. Act like your best friend called you and asked “How should i achieve INSERT GOAL HERE?” You know that your friend really wants this, so you don't just wanna say “I dont know” This would be really rude. Try your best and describe what you think would be the right path for your friend to achieve the goal. The third exercise is daily goal setting. Install a to-do list on your phone and get ready. You will set goals 2 days at a time. Think “If i had to do 4 things to push me in the right direction of the human i want to be, what should i do today?” Do the same thing for tomorrow also. The daily goals could be something like this. I have a goal of being more positive. To be more positive today I will: Listen to a guided meditation for gratitude. Go for a walk and listen to an audiobook about being positive. Get a positive interaction with another human. Do something for myself that I love. The rules of daily goal setting are simple. Once you write a goal you cannot delete it again. You can only go one day over the deadline. (Try not to) The goals will also come to you when you are listening to an audiobook on the subject your goal is in. Do this everyday and see how much of a difference this will make in your life in just 1 month. Thanks for reading my blog! I really hope you can use some of this. If you can just use 1 of the things I wrote about, my goal would be achieved! Write in the comments what you think, and again thanks for stopping by on my blog! I'm very grateful for you being here!
